A one-year hiatus couldn’t keep Floyd Mayweather Jr. from dominating his recent fight with Robert Guerrero. Since he is clearly in top form, the most significant next step he could make in the twilight of his career would be to finally make the fantastical showdown between him and Manny Pacquiao a reality.

Mayweather argues that the fight would not hold any weight, given the fact that Pacman lost his two most recent bouts. He expressed that sentiment in an interview with Jordan Schultz of the Huffington Post:

Timothy Bradley Jr. has agreed in principle to defend his welterweight title against Juan Manuel Marquez in a Sept. 14 showdown at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Either fighter could have chosen to take on Manny Pacquiao — a fighter who lost to Bradley via a divisive split decision and was KO’d by Marquez in the fourth of their storied fight history — but instead they settled on the challenge of fighting one another.

On a recent conference call, multi-division world champion Floyd Mayweather, who is defending his WBC welterweight title against mandatory challenger Robert Guerrero on May 4, commented on the status of his WBA super welterweight “super” world title. “I wanted to defend my WBA title after this fight, but I guess I’m no longer the WBA champ,” said Floyd, “so I didn’t know I got stripped of my title.”

The WBA still has Floyd listed as their titleholder on the WBA website, however Canelo Alvarez’ title unification win over Austin Trout would qualify him as WBA super welterweight “super” champion. Inquiries on Mayweather’s WBA status to our normally forthcoming WBA contacts have yielded deafening silence. Whether this means Floyd is really stripped or that the WBA is trying to find a loophole to keep both Floyd and Canelo as “co-super champions” remains to be seen.

With Roger Mayweather reportedly having some awkward moments in camp now that he’s essentially been demoted to an assistant trainer for his nephew, new lead trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr acknowledges that the relationship between he and his brother isn’t exactly great at the moment:

“It’s so-so. The only thing I’m saying is this, sometimes he comes to gym and we don’t speak. I’ll sit right there and he walks right past me. We’re family man, speak. That’s what I do. When I come in, I got manners and very good manners. When someone comes by you and don’t speak — I mean, come on, man. It ain’t cool, whether it’s family or it just be another person.”

In stunning fashion, the judges awarded a split-decision victory to Desert Storm, rocking the boxing community and giving the welterweight title to a man that has not been in the ring since. Pacman’s fallout has been rough, too, after a knockout loss to Marquez in December put his career in doubt and his legacy on the line.
